Over time, we’ve all learnt the importance of a good moisturizer for great skin. We’ve also started using a good sunscreen before we step out of our homes now. But are you missing a very crucial step in your skincare routine just because you don’t think it makes any visible difference? Have you heard of the holy trinity of CTM – cleansing, toning and moisturizing? I know that a lot of you skip the toning step! A toner is a very key aspect of your beauty regimen. So lets talk toners and toning today!
A toner does exactly what the name says – it tones your skin. In simpler terms, a toner looks almost like water (but is definitely not just water) and penetrates quickly into your skin to give it hydration and nutrients. It also removes dead cells and dirt off your face. It creates a base for your moisturizer / serum to work its magic. It basically preps your skin to absorb the moisturizer.
Imagine this: You’ve cleansed your face with your go-to face wash, which has taken off the dirt and impurities but also has stripped some of the natural oils and hydration. At this point your skin is dry and brittle like a coarse sponge. If at this point you slather moisturizer on a sponge, it won’t absorb it. However, what a toner does is that it prepares your pores by making them even and hydrated.
How and when do I use a toner?
You have to use a toner immediately after washing / cleansing / exfoliating your face. And when I say immediately, I mean within minutes! I know it sounds crazy but when your skin is damp after a cleanse, it’s the best time to apply a toner.
You can either take some toner in the palms of your hand, dab it on to your skin with your fingers or take a cotton pad, sprinkle some toner onto it and swipe it across your face in upwards motion.
At this point, your skin is ready for moisturizer or serum or SPF. Dermatologists and aestheticians recommend that you do this twice daily, morning and before you hit the bed.
When in doubt, always remember C-T-M!
